Happy New Year (albeit a bit belated). I hope that 2017 has started off even better than you had expected. It certainly has for me! Last year started out great, however midway through the year it took a turn for the worst and I’ve spent the past 6 months trying to pull myself out of that funk. Yes, I said it. I, Ana Cabán, was in a funk from July 1 – December 31st, 2016. Not only was I in a funk but I kept myself super busy, busy distracting myself from the hurt and pain of my new husband deciding that he actually didn’t want to me married. (If you missed that blog post you can catch up here.) Why am I sharing all of this with you, you might ask. I’ll tell you.
As I complete my 46th circle around the sun I, like you, have been through my share of ups and downs in life. Whether they were personal, professional, romantic, or family-oriented, there has always been a “takeaway” from each experience. Now, I’m not going to lie and say that I always knew why something had happened, or why I had to experience it. I didn’t, and I don’t. In fact, there are still a few life experiences that I am still can’t quite to wrap my head around. But what I will say is that I have learned to reflect on these experiences and life lessons in preparation for the future. That’s why at the end of each year I always carve out time to do a couple of things:
- Clean out the house
I go through and get rid of things that I no longer use, or wear, or that no longer serve me. It’s basically spring cleaning in December. And I love it! There’s nothing like making space for new, and exciting things to enter. And the only way to do that is to truly make space, literally! My general rule is that if I have not used, nor worn the item, in the past year out it goes! Never purged like that? Try it! It’s liberating, I promise!
- Reflect and prepare/anticipate
The second thing that I do is take some time to reflect on the year that is coming to a close. What went well, what went poorly and what could I have done differently? And most importantly, what do I want in the new year?
This year I added a third ritual. I decided to come up with a word for 2017. I know what 2016 represented for me. But 2016 is over now. Now it’s time to focus on the New Year, this year! So I decided to come up with a word for my 2017.
The word that jumped to the front of my mind was “kindness”. As I mentioned, I spent half of 2016 pushing myself to be busy, so that I didn’t have to deal with the pain that I was feeling. But what ended up happening was that I just delayed the pain and suffering and was very stressed out in the process. I constantly felt like I was not living up to my own expectations. (We’re our own worst critics, you know?). It was frustrating and exhausting, and I knew that I couldn’t keep that up in the New Year. So I’ve decided to make this year my year of kindness (and healing). I promise to be kind to myself. Instead of adding to my “to do” list I will focus on my “let go” list. (What can I remove from my list?). And you know what? It’s working. I’ve been feeling great! I have more energy and am much more optimistic about my future than I have in ages!
As we start of this new, and exciting year, I invite you to take some time to clean your house (really purge), as well as reflect on last year.
And then take a moment and think about a word for 2017. YOUR word for 2017! What will this year mean to you? (Please share below.)

Keep your metabolism roaring this holiday season with these 7 simple tips:
- ¡Párate derecho! Stand up Straight! – When your body is in proper alignment your body, (especially your back and buttocks), have more strength, so you can walk faster and burn more calories. Stand up straight, with your ears and shoulders aligned over your hips and walk, walk, walk.
- ¡Muéve los brazos! Move your arms! – Maintain your arms at 90-degree angles and pump them vigorously. Not only will you burn more calories, you will also keep your shoulders, the most complicated joint in the body, lubricated and healthy.
- ¡Pasito a pasito! Take smaller steps! – Taking smaller, quicker steps will actually boost your burn. Try timing yourself walking 100 steps, then recover for one minute. Take another 100 steps, trying to cut off five seconds from your time. Repeat 10x.
- ¡Usa el asfalto! Use the pavement! Want to work your calves, hamstrings and glutes? Roll through your feet, from heel to ball. When you get to the ball of your foot push off, as if you were cleaning the sole of your shoe. The more muscles you use, the more calories you burn.
- ¡Levanta el latido del corazón! Raise your heart rate! – Wearing a heart rate monitor can keep you working at your optimal fat-burning pace. It’s like having your own coach.
- ¡Haz metas que se ven! Set goals that you can see! – Choose markers like park benches and stop signs and speed up until you reach them. Then slow down for the same distance.
- ¡Aumenta la fuerza! Add strength! – The more muscles you use the more calories you burn. Add some simple strength moves, like lunges, squats and push-ups, for más burn. While you’re walking stop every five minutes and do one minute of strength moves. This will not only help your boost your metabolism when you exercise but also long term, like when you sleep. How great is that?

“The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.”
He continued, “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind].”

Life works in mysterious ways. And sometimes it just doesn’t make sense. One thing that I have realized is that eventually it works itself out, and often setbacks actually help you re-evaluate your life, and chart a new course.
I recently had a big setback in my personal life. While I could have allowed it to totally derail me, I didn’t. I’m not going to lie. I did isolate myself, become introspective, cry a lot, sleep and eventually came out of that dark place. Though at this point in time, I cannot yet clearly see the lesson in the event I can take solace in, and give gratitude for, the beauty of the relationship until that point. I say this not to impress you, but to impress upon you that there is often a lesson to be learned, and something to be grateful for.
Who knew that my marriage to my “King”, (as the minister referred to him), would end so quickly? Or that he would decide that he was no longer cut out to be married to someone, and required to compromise on things, “for as long as we both shall live”? Not me! Just 4 months after our beautiful wedding in Montego Bay, Jamaica, my husband decided that he no longer wanted to be my life partner.
One Friday night, just a few weeks ago, he sat me down and said, “We have to talk”. I was shocked, dumbfounded. No, that’s not true. I was completely blindsided. Actually felt like I was hit by Mack truck. (Didn’t see that coming.) And for the first 3 weeks I went through the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Five stages that I’m sure that I will revisit, again. But something happened after that third week. I just got tired of crying. It was time to stop my personal pity party and decide what I wanted next, what life without my new husband would look like, and that’s what led me to this blog post. While our romance and wedding were beautiful and like a fantasy, when the dust settled from my husband’s departure I was right back where I actually want to be, which is providing value to YOU!
What truly inspires me most is bringing joy, positivity, inspiration and motivation to you! I hadn’t been doing that for quite some time, and this morning, (while doing my workout), it became very evident that I am most fulfilled, when I am providing value to others.
So, please stay connected with me. As much as I love giving to you, I love receiving your support and encouragement. I’m excited to say that starting tomorrow, August 1st, I’ll be doing daily FB Live broadcasts on my Ana Caban Fan Page. Tune in Monday through Friday for your daily dose of inspiration, motivation and positivity, with my La Buena Bites. I can’t wait to connect with you there!

Strapped for time. Check out my latest time saving tips for wellness pros, or ANYONE, as featured in this month’s Peak Pilates Newsletter.
Time management is an interesting topic; it’s also a very important topic for service professionals because it’s our most valuable commodity, and for some of us it’s our only resource. When we teach a Pilates session, not only are we sharing our expertise, we are dedicating an hour of our time to the session. Basically, we are selling our time. That being said, it’s essential that you value your time and make sure that you are using it in the best way possible. Your time is irreplaceable. You can replace a broken mirror, but you can’t get that hour back. Read more…

My new favorite workout? Hot yoga! Yes, you read that correctly. I know, I know… If you had told me (at any point in time) that I would willingly walk into a hot yoga class, and like it, I would’ve told you that you were NUTS! Well, the truth of the matter is that I walked into class in order to do some research. Nothing more. I was asked to check out a particular hot yoga “sculpt” class, to see how this studio incorporated weights into a yoga class. Let me start by saying that I wasn’t so much a fan of the weights as I was the warmth. The studio was heated to between 92-95 degrees Fahrenheit. It was also a humid warmth. (Apparently they also had a “dry” heated yoga studio. I much prefer humidity over really dry heat, so I was perfectly happy there.) What I came to realize during that class was that it was exactly what I needed, a place to sweat out the small stuff. Taking that time to focus on my body and my breath, in a warm space, was so calming. I just loved it. I’ve now gotten kinda hooked, and am actually getting ready to head out to a yoga class tonight.
What do you do to relax and recharge? If you’re feeling like the stress of the life, and the upcoming holidays, is getting to you I encourage you to find an outlet where you, too, can sweat out the small stuff.

I started this article by revealing the first of my three insider secrets to breaking the cycle of trading hours for dollars to help you soar in business and life in 2016. What was the first insider secret, you ask? The riches are in the niches!
That means determine what sets YOU apart from other Pilates instructors. Perhaps that’s by recognizing what you are passionate about, in life and in your work. Maybe you teach more modalities than just Pilates. Or maybe you make outcalls to clients. Perhaps you attract a particular audience. Your job is not to work with everyone—in fact, that’s the opposite of what you should be doing.
The key to failure is trying to please everybody.
• You’ve never raised your rates before.
• Eight or nine out of every 10 prospective clients are saying “yes” to your rates.
• Other instructors are charging more than you even though you have more experience.
• The only reason you haven’t yet raised your rates is because of fear.
Make it immediately clear WHAT problem you solve.
Make it immediately clear WHAT result they can expect to achieve by working with you.
Have ONE compelling message that is instantly clear.
Have an Opt-In Box, which gathers their name and e-mail address, ABOVE the “fold” (meaning that it can be seen without scrolling down).

“The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.” Maureen Dowd
I’ve been excited to write this article for weeks now, yet each time I sit down to write it I just end up with a bunch of ideas floating all over the page. Why? Because I could go on and on about why service professionals aren’t claiming their worth and how passionate I am about changing that. In an effort to spare you all of the details, I’ve distilled the chatter in my head down to the three major pitfalls that I see over and over again and three insider secrets to break the cycle and help you soar in business and life.
Most of us became Pilates instructors because we truly believe in Pilates and we have seen it change bodies and lives. However somewhere along the journey we stopped treating our businesses as such and began running them like charitable organizations or hobbies. The three major pitfalls that I see over and over again are that most Pilates instructors and many other wellness professionals, although offering an important and valued service, haven’t distinguished themselves from the rest of the herd, are afraid to ask for better compensation, and don’t take advantage of this amazing FREE vehicle that we call the Internet. Because of that, they remain frustrated and under-compensated, attracting less than ideal clients and remain relatively unknown. All of that can end, however. Read on for the first of my three insider secrets to help you soar this year.
Insider Secret #1 -The riches are in the niches
Ok, so you’re a Pilates Instructor. Well, if you live in Los Angeles, like me, you’re one of many. So the real question is “What sets you apart from the rest of the herd?” A great place to start is by looking at your current clientele. What is the common thread between the majority of your clients? Perhaps your clients are on a mission to lose weight, or maybe they come to you out of physical pain. You might draw a young crowd or an older one. Maybe you offer additional services, like wellness coaching, nutrition, massage, etc. Work with what you have. Look for a common thread and build on it. The key is to have a clear niche that is focused on solving a specific problem that people are motivated to pay for. You don’t need to serve everyone, (nor should you try to). You should only serve those who need exactly what you have to offer and have the resources to pay you fairly for it.
Once you’ve figured out your niche you can create your unique brand. I’ve branded myself a Shift Agent because I inspire women to shift their lives to live (what I have coined) La Buena Life. I’ve used my Latino heritage and passion for helping others to live healthy & wealthy lives to define my brand. As you might expect, I often sprinkle Spanish into my Pilates instruction, website, e-zine and more. (Sound loco? Perhaps it is, but it’s very “me.” No one else can do a better job of being me, than me. The key is to revel in your authentic self and share it with the world. Nowadays consumers are interested in transparency. The more real and transparent you can be, the better).
Another example is my colleague, Pilates instructor Cassie Ho, (www.blogilates.com), who features fitness, food and fun on her uber-popular blog, and web series BlogilatesTV. So what sets YOU apart? What are you passionate about? Perhaps you teach more modalities than just Pilates. Or maybe you make out-calls to clients. Maybe you attract a particular audience. Your job is not to work with everyone—in fact, that’s the opposite of what you should be doing.
The key to failure is trying to please everybody.
In order to be most successful, follow your passion, use your talents and be SPECIFIC about your ideal client. (By the way, your uniqueness might be something less obvious, such as your love for horses. Whatever it is, use it!)

Here are 5 of my “go to” rules for getting summertime (or anytime) fit & healthy!
Start the day with a healthy breakfast.
It’s so easy to blame a busy schedule, or a lack of appetite for not eating a good (or any) breakfast. The thing is that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Plus, according to Andrea Giancoli, R.D., spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, “People who skip breakfast tend to overeat at the next meal”. Well, that isn’t very good, is it? A great, hearty breakfast, which will keep you full for hours, and trim is a bowl of steel cut oatmeal with berries, or as some people refer to it, “Irish Oatmeal”. This oatmeal is low in sugar and high in fiber, keeping you fuller and your blood sugar levels more level, making you trim and nicer to be around.
Aim to eat foods whose names you can pronounce.
If you can’t even say it, do you want to eat it? Maybe. Sure there are some natural ingredients that may have strange or long names, but as a general rule I figure that if I can’t pronounce the ingredients names, or even recognize them I’m probably better avoiding that food, all together. As a general rule, processed foods (with all those words you can’t pronounce) aren’t very healthy, are hard to digest AND they won’t really satisfy you. So try sticking to foods in their most natural state.
Eat every 3-4 hours.
Ok, I’m not saying to binge every 3-4 hours. Oh no! I mean, eat smaller meals throughout the day. It may sound hard or crazy, but just think about it. A car runs better when it has a full tank, not when it’s dragging on “empty”. Do what you can to eat something small and healthy every 3-4 hours, or so, and you’ll see how much more energized (and trim) you are.
Pack half of it up.
When dining out a great trick that I use, which I credit Brittany Spears for turning me on to, is ordering my meal and asking for half of it to be boxed up “to go”. We all know that restaurants over serve us (well, that’s unless We’re dining French or eating sushi) so it’s our job to pull back the reigns a little. The good news is that by doing this you will still enjoy a delicious meal and BONUS-you can enjoy it again, the following day.
Make every bite count.
Count as you chew. Did you know that to properly digest food and receive the most nutrients we should chew each bite 20-30 times? Yes siree-Bob! Slow down, light a candle, put on some smooth tunes and ENJOY your food. Make every chew count, literally!
Have a super fun summer!

Did you know that only 31% of women are consistent about wearing sunscreen daily? The other 69% mistakenly believe that they’re exempt. Here are 4 of the many razones (reasons) why they are very mistaken.
Razón Número 1 (read “Uno”) – UV Rays Are Everywhere
Whether we are at sitting outside, under fluorescent lights or at the computer, we are constantly exposed to UV rays. In fact, most of us rack up about 14 hours of casual UV exposure per week. Prolonged human exposure to solar UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eyes and immune system. And in the long run, UV radiation diminishes the cells of the skin, fibrous tissue and blood vessels, which may lead to wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer.
Make sure that your moisturizer has an SPF of at least 30, and apply each morning. Planning on sweating? Then make sure that it’s sweat-resistant and slather it on all sun-exposed areas, just to be on the safe side. A great one is R+F ESSENTIALS Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Broad Sunscreen. It’s water-resistant for up to 40 minutes and does more than just defend against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Razón Número 2 – Sunscreens ARE Safe
Contrary to popular belief, the chemicals used in sunscreens are NOT more dangerous than sun exposure. That belief may have come from studies using animal data, not humans. An example of one such study fed mice huge doses of oxy-benzone, a UV–light absorber commonly found in sunscreens. Researchers believed that strong estrogen effects in these sunscreens could cause cancer cells to grow más rápido. However, according to dermatologist Dr. Steven Wang it would take more than 250 years of using sunscreen daily for you to be exposed to the amount of oxybenzone used in the study.
Wear sunscreen daily and proudly. If you’re still worried about potential ill-effects of ingredients try a sunscreen like R+F ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides Broad Spectrum SPF 20, which are safe for the face and body.
Razón Número 3 – You Don’t Look as Good as You Think
Don’t get me wrong. I like a healthy glow as much as the next gal. But what I don’t like, and wouldn’t want to look forward to is saggy, leathery skin. You KNOW what I’m talking about. Don’t let that be you!
Get your glow on with a subtle bronzing lotion. There are so many available these days. My personal favorite is R+F ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tanner.
Razón Número 4 – There is Always a First Time
Just because you have “never burned” doesn’t mean that it’ll never happen. Why do we wear seat beats? Because we are constantly getting into car accidents? Not! But we might. Better safe, than sorry. When we were younger it might not have been such a big deal, but as we age our skin loses its ability to effectively produce melanin and THAT may actually make us more apt to burn. The bottom line is that whether or not your skin is rojo sun damage-including wrinkles and loss of elasticity- are occurring.
Try a sunscreen like R+F ESSENTIALS Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Body Sunscreen, which containt antioxidant vitamins C and E absorb damaging free radicals while dimethicone helps maintain your skin’s moisture barrier and anti-inflammatory ingredients protect against environmental stress. Safe for the whole family.

The past few years have been tough ones one me. My marriage, of over a decade, came to an end, and moving from that family unit to something new has been a big transition for all of those involved. And although I’m usually a fan of the spotlight, and inspiring others to go after their dreams, all that I felt that I could do was retreat, heal, and gain new purpose. That was not easy for me. In fact, I spent a lot of time feeling like a disappointment to others, and a fake. Here I was the self-proclaimed “Good Life Guru”, who had spent years inspiring people to dream big, go after their dreams and believe that anything is possible and I wasn’t even sure how I was going to handle my new life and role, as a single mother, (and someone who had failed at something very sacred – her marriage.)
I’ve now come to accept my life experiences as part of an ever changing journey, which sometimes moves quite quickly, and other times feels absolutely stuck. I’ve learned that although there is often a lot of noise and many expectations around me, as it turns out I can actually be my own worst critic. And when that happens I know that it’s time for me to retreat, recharge and re-assess.
So, I have spent a lot of time thinking about what I have accomplished in life, and where I want to go next, my Act II. And I feel that where I need to be right now is writing, and speaking, about learning from experiences, trusting your instincts, and recognizing and harnessing your power within.
I invite you to take a moment to retreat, recharge and re-assess what it is that YOU would like out of your life in 2016, and beyond. Ask yourself what is serving, and what no longer serves, you. Listen to your heart. And make any necessary changes to move towards your La Buena Life.
Here’s to Act II!

When was the last time you checked in with your body and mind?
Taking care of YOU, to some, may mean getting a full head to toe manicure and pedicure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a spa-lover myself. But that’s just external. Taking care of yourself has to start from within; you need to work on yourself from the inside out. When you’re balanced from the inside, your outward appearance will reflect that. In order to have that healthy glow, you’ve got to remove the emotional blocks that aren’t allowing you to be happy and radiate your joy.
There are so many things in life that can be stressful and affect the way that you look and feel. It’s important to realize that some things are out of your control. As my son Vincent says, “Just take 5 slow breaths, in and out, like I do. You’ll feel better.” Stay positive and rest assured that this too shall pass. These simple tips have certainly helped me live happier and less stressful life:
A few things you can do each day to keep your mind and spirit together:
- As I mentioned above, make sure you take breathing breaks, just to check in with yourself. When things are stressful, take a moment to gauge the situation and how y
- ou are feeling. Take care of you first.
- Eat healthier foods. When you eat healthy, lean foods, your moods reflect how your body processes nutrition.
- Reward yourself. When something goes well and you have completed tasks that you set out to do, reward yourself. Go to a movie after work, or do something even simpler and get a manicure or pick-up a new lip gloss.
If you’re happy on the inside tasks will become easier and your stress levels will go down. The second step to caring for yourself is to stay active. Exercise sends out positive messages (neural stimulators) to your brain that boost your moods and your immune system. Happy, active people get sick less than those who worry and stress. Little movements can go a long way during the day. Get up and stretch every hour, stay hydrated and be mindful of your body’s signals just in case you feel stiff and anxious.
Your body is your temple; treat it accordingly! When you take care of yourself, everything becomes easier. Make yourself number one when it comes to living your life. You’ll be a better friend, partner, colleague, etc.
Have you checked in with your body and mind lately?

It’s official! The holidays really are here. I mean, Halloween has come and gone and now we’re really in full holiday swing. We all know that the holidays are supposed to be all about peace, love and joy, however they can also be stressful. Why? Oh, I don’t know, maybe because they just creep up on us and we aren’t necessarily ready for them. Or because when we actually do get out to the stores to buy food or gifts we experience parking rage, (that of others, or even our own). Or maybe because we have to travel, (at the busiest travel time of year), to see our families, whom we love but don’t always agree with us on everything, causing us undue stress. That being said, in order to make your holidays more peaceful and fun I’ve come up with 7 simple ways to reduce your stress during this season, or anytime. Here they are:
1. Use imagery~ Take a moment to imagine yourself in a beautiful, peaceful place. Maybe it’s a luxurious beach resort that you vacationed at or somewhere that you dream of going to. The key is to, momentarily, remove yourself from the anxiety provoking environment you are in order to release some of the tension you feel.
2. Breathe!~ Breathing exercises are a great way to relieve stress anytime and anywhere. They’re easy to learn, easy to use, and can be done as soon as you feel any tension and immediately begin feeling better. A simple and effective exercise is to “inhale peace” and “exhale stress”.
3. Light Up (a candle that is)~ Aromatherapy can help you feel calmer and more at peace. Light an aromatherapy candle or have essential oils available to smell in times of stress and chaos.
4. Move That Body!~ Get up from sitting, (especially important on long flights). Take a short walk. In as little as 5 minutes you will feel like you were able to separate yourself from the current situation, regroup and feel like yourself again.
5. Have a Drink~ To relax nothing is better than a cup of herbal tea. Chamomile tea is one of my favorites because in addition to being an aid for stomach aches, (which are often stress related), it is also a great sleep aid.
6. Listen to Music~ Music can really transport you. When you are feeling stressed just tune in to some mellow or soothing music and watch your stress just slip away.
7. Develop a Positive Attitude~ Optimists and positive thinkers experience better health, less stress, and más suerte (more luck) in life. Developing a more positive frame of mind may take a little time and practice, however it can change your life and how you live it. Practice makes perfect and the rewards are worth it.
Here’s to a fun and stress-free holiday season!

Send me a DM that says “I’m totally skeptical, I don’t think it’s the right time, I don’t think I know anyone, I’m too busy and I’m terrified of failing at something else and having everyone annoyed by me. But….I want to hear about it.” Because that is how EVERYONE feels at some point.
I know that these products work. I came to R+F because I’m turning 46 soon, and my skin is changing. I had noticed that it had lost it’s elasticity and plumpness. After seeing so much press about R+F, and so many amazing before/after photos, I figured that I owed it to myself to give it a try. But why not make money, while getting beautiful skin? (That’s exactly what I thought to myself. If you know me, you know that I like to talk. If my skin looks good I’m going to talk about the products that are making it look so good. So why not be compensated? Especially with a 60-day, empty container, money-back guarantee. Duh! Where was the risk?) Voilá…I became a Consultant.
Fast forward 3 weeks and I am already promoted to Executive Consultant! Why? Because the products are THAT good, and I’m not afraid to talk about something that I’m excited about.
So if you’re ready to have beautiful skin, and improve your life in ways that you had only dreamed of, it’s time to talk! DM me!! Skeptics, CONTACT ME! You’re not alone, and I’m here to answer your questions.
You can sit there and watch me, or join me on this journey to the top. Your choice!

I just love my Rodan+Fields skincare products and the opportunity to partner with two amazing, and wildly successful women, (the creators of Proactiv). With their direct selling program I am able to indulge in their amazing skincare line, share it with my friends and family and in return I have created an additional revenue stream.
Here’s an idea of the opportunities that exist with direct selling. Want a piece of the action? Join my team! Click Here to Learn More, or call me at 323.744.1327.

I’m so thrilled to be joining Rodan+Fields. I was time to replenish my skin care products and, now approaching 46, I felt like I needed to kick it up a notch. After seeing AMAZING results on FB and in the media I decided to jump ship from my old products and try out Rodan+Fields.

I’m excited to be heading back to my old town, Miami, later this month. The best part is that I’m going there to teach at not one, but TWO, conferences. So whether you’re a lover of Spinning or Pilates, I’ve got you covered! Join me from May 28th-31st for the Pilates Empowerment Summit, followed by WSSC (World Spinning and Sports Conditioning Conference) in sunny Miami!
I’d love to see you at either, or both, conferences. We’re gonna have fun!Older Posts »
