Shape Up For Spring in 5 Simple Steps

Spring has sprung.  Flowers are blooming and the sun is really beginning to shine.  All is new.  Having grown up in Massachusetts, I can honestly say that, spring has always been my favorite time of year.  That being said, I thought that I’d share my top 5 tips for shaping up for spring.

Eat fresh! – It’s that simple.  Eat real, fresh fruits and vegetables.  Steer away from processed & frozen foods, which for the most part lack in nutrition and are full of additives that your body doesn’t really even know how to process.  Trust me, your body will thank you.

Move your body! –I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.  “Move your body!”  No excuses, just schedule in 2-3 body toning workouts and 3 cardio workouts/week.  Even 20 minutes counts.  There’s no need to even leave your house.  Click Here for some workout ideas.

Glam you jambes! – Show some skin but make sure to groom a little first.  Start off by exfoliating your legs with a loofah, mesh sponge or body scrub product.  Then wax or shave and don’t forget a yummy pedicure, for the finishing touch.

Get your glow on! – Look sunny, without the sun.  We ALL look better with a little glow and luckily it’s easy to get your glow on with a sunless tanner, at home and in no time at all.

Doll it up, Baby! – Indulge in a fun spring outfit.  You know that you deserve it!

Getting Zen, In Only 10

Contrary to popular belief, meditation is not about tuning out and negating the rest of the world.  It’s actually about tuning in, to your breath, to your body, to your mind.  According to world-renowned authority in the field of mind-body healing, Deepak Chopra, meditation is “a way to get in the space between your thoughts. You have a thought here, a thought here, and there’s little space between every thought”.  The beauty of meditation is that it can be done anywhere, at any time.  Actress and Humanitarian Angelina Jolie has said “I find meditation in sitting on the floor with the kids coloring for an hour, or going on the trampoline.”  Many other celebrities, such as Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes and Will Smith swear by its positive effects.  Here are three simple steps to getting zen in only 10 minutes.

  1. Sit up straight, and tall.  Scan from the top to the bottom of your body, making sure that each part is relaxed, (eyes, cheeks, mouth, neck, etc. to your toes).
  2. Become aware of your breath moving in and out.  Your mind will wander.  That’s totally ok.  The idea is to continually bring your focus back to your breath each time your thoughts travel away from it.  Inhale deeply and exhale deeply, maintaining good, supported, but not tense, posture.
  3. It’s really that simple.  As time goes on you will find that your mind wanders less frequently and for shorter periods of time.  You will become skilled at tuning back in to your breath.  Start this practice for a few minutes and increase to 10 minutes, or longer.  See how in tune with your mind and your body you become.

Do You Have F.O.M.O.?

There is a name for the person who goes for it all, has to be moving all the time, and never turns anything down. According to Speaker, Life Coach and author Deborah Deras, that would be an adrenaline addict. This person has F.O.M.O., the Fear of Missing Out, and usually had a long “to do” list. You know this person (perhaps it’s even you), the one who needs to be involved in everything because they honestly feel that their life will be lacking in some way, if they are not. So, what they do is say “yes” to everything, over-scheduling, multi-tasking, over-stressing and actually getting less done. With today’s technology, it’s so easy to do. And even if their intuition tells them not to overload their schedule or multi-task, they do. Research shows that multi-tasking not only slows you down but actually makes you less effective. While you’re in the midst of a task a simple distraction like a phone call can set you back as much as 45 minutes in re-gaining your concentration. Yikes! And I’m not talking about taking the call. Even just looking at the phone to see who’s calling, can break your concentration.

Deborah has some great techniques for achieving more with less effort. One of them is making a “let go list”. Rather than making a “to do” list she recommends writing a list each day of things that are “zapping your energy”. (You know, the ones tied to that negative voice in your head). She suggests trusting your intuition and writing down at least one thing (i.e. activity or thought) that you could let go of that day. By letting go of this item you will be less stressed and achieve more with less effort. She also suggests scheduling “white space” into your calendar. We are usually so busy squeezing things into our schedules that we forgot to leave ourselves time to regroup and recharge. That’s why Deborah suggests literally scheduling periods of rest, which she calls “grace time” into your day. That way you will have the energy to actually DO the things on your calendar.

So slow down! No more “mañana wanna”, says Deborah. Stay in the present, follow your intuition, be in your body, not in your head, and do what moves you even if that’s taking a nap.
As a recovering adrenaline addict, Deborah Deras knows what it takes to be able to balance it all and achieve more with less effort.

¡Buen Viaje!

Travel can be stressful and also uncomfortable. Unless you’re travelling first class, air and train travel can be tough. (Let’s not even talk about being stuck in a car for long periods of time). The good news is that there are exercises that you can do right in your seat, (whether in a plane or on a train or even in an automobile~not while driving, of course), that can help make the ride more comfortable. Here are some of my favorite tips and moves for keeping my circulation going and my body agile.


When travelling make sure that you:
• Are as comfortable as possible. This can be done by using a neck pillow/pillow and wearing a wrap, which can double as a blanket, (as many airports have removed blankets from shorter flights and some are even charging for blankets and pillows now).
• Don’t clutter the floor with your belongings. Stow larger items in the overhead bins and place items that you will use, (like your iPod, book, eye drops, glasses), in the seatback pocket.
• Keep legs uncrossed to encourage good blood flow.
• Stay hydrated. Airplanes, in particular, are very dry and the food that they offer, (be it nuts, pretzels, chips or sandwiches), is usually very salty and the airlines never serve you enough water. Bring your own water, (which you can buy after passing through security), and avoid drinking caffeine and alcohol, which will only dehydrate you more. And, of course, bring your own healthy, low sodium snacks, like fruits, (fresh or dried), and nuts. (Bonus tip: Apply a clear gel mask to your face before the flight to avoid over-drying of skin, which can lead to breakouts. My favorite? Sampar Nocturnal Lifting Mask).


While seated take the time to:
• Do simple neck stretches and shoulder rolls, a few times in each direction.
• Breathe! Link fingers together, in front of your chest and breathe in and out a few times.
• Bend forward, (and hold for a few seconds), then arch your back, (and hold for a few seconds).
• Flex your wrists, moving your hands up and down, a few times.
• Link your fingers behind your head and curl your chin towards your chest, stretching your neck and upper back, and breathe deeply. Repeat a few times.
• Rotate your ankles a few times in each direction.
• Place your feet on the floor and lift your heels, then lower heels and lift toes. Repeat a few times.
• Pull one knee in towards your chest and stretch, then alternate legs. Repeat a few times.
• Bring one ankle on to the other knee and gently press your knee down, for a good hip stretch. Repeat on the other side.
• Sit tall and then twist your torso, to look our one window. Unwind. Then sit tall and twist your torso to look out the opposite window. Unwind. Repeat a few times.
• And whenever possible take breaks to walk up and down the aisles.

Enjoy these tips and moves and you are sure to have a pleasant journey.

We are all busy these days, in fact the current trend for responding to “How are you?” is “Busy”. But just because we are “busy” doesn’t mean that we need to forget about our appearance. Here are some quick and easy tips to help you look great whether you have 1 minute or ten.

Wash Wisely

Use a cream, versus gel cleanser, at night. The oil in the cream cleanser will dissolve dirt, sunscreen, waterproof mascara and long-wearing lipstick, in one pass. Not to mention, creams leave skin more moisturized, which is great while you sleep.

Streamline Your Creams

Instead of using a moisturizer, a sunscreen and a foundation try using a tinted moisturizer, which will moisturize, unify, tone and protect at the same time.

Make Your Own Facial

Facials are so good for the skin. They can improve the tone & texture of the skin and give you a healthy glow. If you “too busy” even book a facial mix some flour with a couple of egg whites and smooth onto your skin. Leave on for 10 minutes and then rinse. Your pores will be tightened and your face refreshed, in no time!

Tus ojos (your eyes) are the focal point of your face, so don’t forget to play them up. For a quick pop spread a pale shade of a shimmery shadow onto your lids and create contrast with black mascara.

Brows, Ladies

If your eyebrows are groom then you look polished. In order to look super pulled together, (whether you are or not), make it to a salon for a professional brow shaping once a season and maintain the shape, as needed, at home.

Add a Pop of Color
Give your lips and cheeks a pop, with the same color. All you need is a red or pink lipstick, which you can use on both the lips AND the mouth. And remember to K.I.S.S-

Off to “The Happy Valley”!

My son and I are off to “The Happy Valley” (the Pioneer Valley, in Western Massachusetts) this week. I really can’t wait to go. It’ll be a week filled with family fun. My brother, (in photo above), sister-in-law, nephew and my parents will be there. Not to mention that a few of my high school friends will be around. And I am really excited because I am going to have tea with a fellow La Buena Life member and blogger, Carrie ( It’ll be a great week!

I hope that you are all taking some time out to enjoy with your families this summer.
