Just Because You’re a Service Professional Doesn’t Mean That It’s Charity Work

“The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.” Maureen Dowd

I’ve been excited to write this article for weeks now, yet each time I sit down to write it I just end up with a bunch of ideas floating all over the page. Why? Because I could go on and on about why service professionals aren’t claiming their worth and how passionate I am about changing that. In an effort to spare you all of the details, I’ve distilled the chatter in my head down to the three major pitfalls that I see over and over again and three insider secrets to break the cycle and help you soar in business and life.

Most of us became Pilates instructors because we truly believe in Pilates and we have seen it change bodies and lives. However somewhere along the journey we stopped treating our businesses as such and began running them like charitable organizations or hobbies. The three major pitfalls that I see over and over again are that most Pilates instructors and many other wellness professionals, although offering an important and valued service, haven’t distinguished themselves from the rest of the herd, are afraid to ask for better compensation, and don’t take advantage of this amazing FREE vehicle that we call the Internet. Because of that, they remain frustrated and under-compensated, attracting less than ideal clients and remain relatively unknown. All of that can end, however. Read on for the first of my three insider secrets to help you soar this year.

Insider Secret #1 -The riches are in the niches

Ok, so you’re a Pilates Instructor. Well, if you live in Los Angeles, like me, you’re one of many. So the real question is “What sets you apart from the rest of the herd?” A great place to start is by looking at your current clientele. What is the common thread between the majority of your clients? Perhaps your clients are on a mission to lose weight, or maybe they come to you out of physical pain. You might draw a young crowd or an older one. Maybe you offer additional services, like wellness coaching, nutrition, massage, etc. Work with what you have. Look for a common thread and build on it. The key is to have a clear niche that is focused on solving a specific problem that people are motivated to pay for. You don’t need to serve everyone, (nor should you try to). You should only serve those who need exactly what you have to offer and have the resources to pay you fairly for it.

Once you’ve figured out your niche you can create your unique brand. I’ve branded myself a Shift Agent because I inspire women to shift their lives to live (what I have coined) La Buena Life. I’ve used my Latino heritage and passion for helping others to live healthy & wealthy lives to define my brand. As you might expect, I often sprinkle Spanish into my Pilates instruction, website, e-zine and more. (Sound loco? Perhaps it is, but it’s very “me.” No one else can do a better job of being me, than me. The key is to revel in your authentic self and share it with the world. Nowadays consumers are interested in transparency. The more real and transparent you can be, the better).

Another example is my colleague, Pilates instructor Cassie Ho, (www.blogilates.com), who  features fitness, food and fun on her uber-popular blog, and web series BlogilatesTV. So what sets YOU apart? What are you passionate about? Perhaps you teach more modalities than just Pilates. Or maybe you make out-calls to clients. Maybe you attract a particular audience. Your job is not to work with everyone—in fact, that’s the opposite of what you should be doing.

The key to failure is trying to please everybody.

In order to be most successful, follow your passion, use your talents and be SPECIFIC about your ideal client. (By the way, your uniqueness might be something less obvious, such as your love for horses. Whatever it is, use it!)
