Pilates & Cross Training

We’re about to start the new year, when everyone jumps on the bandwagon to shed the holiday pounds, and perhaps the additional weight that they put on earlier in the year. I’m all about people exercising, whatever their motivation. What worries me, however is how people jump into all kinds of extreme workouts without the required flexibility and core strength to do those types of exercise safely. That’s where Pilates comes in as the answer to building strength, flexibility and body awareness.  Because Pilates is “mind/body” exercise, (or as I prefer to refer to it, “conscious movement”), it really helps people become more “in tune” with their bodies. Being in tune with your body helps you know your limitations, strengths and weaknesses, when it comes to attempting any type of exercise, or endeavor.


I love Pilates, and I love cross training. My typical workout week includes studio cycling classes, Pilates mat & equipment workouts, ballet barre class and weight training. When I have the time I also like to throw in a Latin dance class. But what I like best of all is the body awareness that core strength that I have from my Pilates workouts that transcend to whatever workout I may do, on any given day. Not convinced? 10 Slimming Tips

Holidays making you soft around the middle? Check out my 10 “Go to” Slimming Tips for the holidays, or anytime!

Tip #1

In order to stay motivated, set a realistic and measurable goal. In other words, map out how much weight you want to lose, or what size you would like to fit into, and most importantly by what date.

Tip #2

Eat a breakfast, daily. You wouldn’t drive your car on empty. Why run on empty yourself? A quick, tummy and healthy option is a slice of brown rice toast with sunflower butter, or raw unsalted almond butter.

Tip #3

Schedule your workouts. Make an appointment with YOU! You’re worth it! Come on, you can squeeze out 30 minutes from your day, to care for your body, mind & spirit. You probably spend more than that on FB. Hmm. Priorities, folks! Make a simple workout calendar. Who doesn’t like crossing off an accomplishment? Nothing wrong with cute little check boxes, either.

Tip #4

Tip #5

Hydrate, Baby! A super-simple way to slim down is to cut out the sugary (and nutrient deficient) drinks. Make water your friend. Not only will you fill-up your tummy, you’ll also jump start your digestion and improve your complexion. (All good things, in my book.)

Tip #6

Wrap it up, Baby! Just because you cooked it, doesn’t mean that you have to eat it all at once. Serve yourself and store the rest. Tomorrow is another day.

Tip #7

Eat all the time! (Well, not exactly). Eat every 3-4 hours, so that you’re never dragging & to avoid the junk food cravings that love to creep in around the 3 o’clock hour.


Have food, will travel. Make sure to pack healthy snacks when hitting the road, or the air. There is nothing healthy about packaged foods. You can do better than that!


Go ad-free! When watching the tube, tablet or phone, skip the commercials. High-cal food images actually stimulate the brain’s appetite control center. Yikes!


Floss and brush right after dinner, so that you’re not tempted to eat again. I mean, who wants to rinse and repeat that one?
