Earlier this week I had the pleasure of interviewing Stephanie Twerdahl, Development Director for the National Kidney Foundation, about their Great Chefs Go Green Organic Event, in Los Angeles, this Sunday. Twerdahl, who has been with the National Kidney Foundation for 5 years, told me that over the years she has been to many food-based fundraising events. Although each of these events had a great purpose she continually found it unsettling to see how much waste was produced. So in planning the National Kidney Foundation’s 23rd Annual Great Chefs of Los Angeles event Twerdahl and her team decided to make it an eco/organic event. To the greatest extent possible, the chefs will use organic, locally grown, sustainable ingredients. Their recipes will be as kidney-healthy as possible.
All flatware, plates and cups will be made of corn and bio-degradable. All signage will be made of recycled materials and there will be recycling bins located throughout the event. Even the furniture (provided by Girari) will be crafted of 98+% post consumer/industrial cast aluminum and faux leather. But, that’s not all! There will be a silent auction featuring products of companies using organic products. The event Get Hip Get Green event gift bags are not only stylish but reusable. As you can see, the National Kidney Foundation is making a big effort to make this event extra special. Twerdahl hopes that the Great Chefs Go Green Organic Event will start a trend towards more eco-conscious fundraisers.
“Usually I don’t eat, but when I eat, I eat GREEN!” quips George Lopez, who will host the event.
