Terrifico Tuesday – Tips for beating the Turkey Day Bloat

Yesterday I was a guest on Los Angeles’ Univision 34 Primera Edición. I shared some holiday anti-bloating tips. Here are the tips that I shared:

1. Drink lots of water during the holidays (and everyday).
Not drinking enough water throughout the day can cause unnecessary bloating. Water is your friend. It has so many health benefits. Not only does it retard bloating, but it also helps with digestion. When the body is dehydrated, or has too much sodium, it grabs on to and stores any water you give it because it thinks it may not get any for a long time. Once your body receives enough water to restore its water level it will let it go of what it has held on to. Also, people often confuse being thirsty with being hungry. So next time you think that you’re hungry grab a glass of water first. If you drink it and still feel hunger pangs have a light snack. And lastly, drinking a glass of water before your meal can lead to you feeling fuller faster. So keeping up your water intake is a great way to beat the bloat and stay trim.

2. Avoid fatty foods
A common cause of bloating & indigestion is from eating the wrong foods. Not only do fatty foods encourage the formation of fat cells within the body, but they delay the process of emptying your stomach, which contributes to bloating. If you can’t avoid fatty foods entirely, opt for small servings. Fruits and vegetables are also a great way to beat the bloat as they are 80 – 90% water.

3. Schedule your workouts
Exercise helps gas pass through the digestive tract more quickly, so you feel better faster. Even a quick ten-minute walk can relieve bloating. Abdominal workouts can tone your abs & make you feel less self-conscious about your belly when you’re bloated. Pilates is a great way to keep your abs strong, toned and taut, therefore disguising any unsightly bloating. Make sure to schedule your workouts into your holiday weekend.     Ana is it true that you should only drink 32 oz of water a day and you should consume it before 12 noon?

    I have been seeing a nutritionist for the past year and this is her teaching. Water w/ lemon or a splash of fruit juice is permitted after your 32 oz but, no pure water.

    What is your take on this?
